You worked hard on your house and your yard so why let it disappear in the dark? Landscape and outdoor lighting elevates your yard by highlighting your favourite areas and features, creating a mood (e.g. relaxing, festive, elegant), and providing security and safety.
Make the most of your space. Why stop using your yard when the sun goes down? Your outdoor space can be an extension of your home. Whether it’s chatting with friends on the patio, a backyard soccer game, or reading your book under the trees, professionally installed exterior and landscape lighting makes all of this possible.
In addition, exterior lighting makes your yard safer and more secure.
Outdoor lighting is used to meet different objectives including:
Strategically placed exterior lights will help protect your property from intruders. By lighting all the entrances to your home and making sure there are no dark spots to hide in, you will make your property less appealing to those who wish to engage in illegal activities.
An electrical switch either opens or closes an electrical circuit to the device it operates. It stops or allows the flow of electricity to the device it controls.
For explanation purposes, we will use a light switch. When the switch is in the “off” position, the circuit is open, stopping the flow of electricity, and turning off the light. When it is in the “on” position, the circuit is closed, allowing electricity to flow and turning on the light.
Switches can be used to control a variety of devices (e.g., lights, fans, garburators). We will refer to them as light switches to simplify matters in this article.
All of us have experienced stubbing a toe or tripping when walking through a yard a night. Sometimes the injuries are more serious. Illuminating the path to your home’s different entrances and places like the laneway to your backyard will help stop you and your friends from injuring yourself.
Landscape lighting covers a host of uses and there are a multitude of light fixtures to aid you in accomplishing the yard of your dreams. You can use it to:
Permanent holiday lights are becoming very popular. These customizable LED lights are installed under the eaves and you can use them year-round, not just at Christmas.
They are controlled and programmed on an app from your smart device. So change them to orange and black for Halloween or your child’s favourite colours for their birthday, the options are endless.
No more climbing up and down ladders in inclement weather, fighting with tangled strings of lights, and worrying about how long is too long to leave them up.
Landscape and outdoor lighting transforms your outside space into a relaxing oasis that is safe, secure, and fun.
What’s the point of going to the expense of buying landscaping and outdoor lights if they don’t work, cause electrical problems, or zap you after the first rainfall? Our licensed electricians will make sure none of that happens and your lighting is installed to the highest standard so it operates safely and reliably.
No matter the purpose of your outdoor lighting, we can help.

A combination of lighting fixtures and effects will give you the nighttime garden of your dreams. But how do you know which fixtures and effects to use to create it?
Thinking about the following will help you choose the right lighting and effects.
Why do you want to add exterior and landscape lighting? Is it to increase security, increase safety, highlight a couple of key features, or another reason?
How you answer this question will guide you toward the right fixtures and effects.
For example, If your goal is to create intimate gathering places, you won’t want to use floodlights. You might want to use a combination of inground lighting, wall lighting, and string lights to create subtle effects like washing to produce the ambience you are after.
Choose the features you want to highlight. The nature of the features will help you decide on the best lighting and effects for them.
For example, if you choose a water feature, you will want to look at underwater lighting. If you have a prize-winning rose garden, you might investigate garden lights.
Pick one or two things to be the focal point. More than that and it can start to get visually cluttered.
If you plan on hosting lots of BBQs, you will choose different lighting options than if you want to be able to look out your window and enjoy your fountain and the uplighting on your trees.
This will also help you decide on the layers of lighting. Just like interior lighting, exterior lighting is broken down into ambient, task, and accent lighting. Ambient lighting sets the mood, task lighting helps you get things done, and accent lighting highlights pretty items.
For example, if you will be hosting a lot, you might invest in some gentle uplighting and string lights to help set the mood (ambient lighting), some downlighting over the BBQ and prep area to help you see what you are doing (task lighting), and some lights to create a washing effect to show off your beautiful outdoor wall hangings (accent lighting).
Like with so many things it always comes down to money. How much you want to spend will impact the lights you choose and the effects you use.
The above questions will get you started on your exterior lighting journey.
Once you’ve answered those questions you will be able to delve into the specifics. Such as:
How you answer the above questions will guide what lighting and effects you will use to turn your yard into a wonderland at night.
