Smart bulbs do more than emit light. They come in a range of models that let you program everything from the brightness to the timing to the colour.
Depending on the model, you can operate them using voice controls via a digital voice assistant (e.g., Alexa) and remotely through Bluetooth or WIFI using a smart device. If you control the bulbs through your smart device, you can control them when you are away from home.
They can be used in most standard sockets.
Yes, you can. There are lightbulbs on the market that double as security cameras. These bulbs not only provide light, but they also let you check on your place from anywhere you have an internet connection.
It depends on the rating of the light fixture. Many light fixtures come with a UL in a circle marking them. This means the fixture is UL listed.
UL standards are used by industries worldwide to rate products’ safety and performance. If a product has a UL marking on it, it means the product meets the UL standards and has been tested by an independent laboratory to prove the product meets the standards.
UL listed lighting fixtures (luminaires) can be rated in the following subcategories:
A dry locations only rating, also called dry-rated, means the light fixture should only be used indoors in rooms where there is almost no risk of dampness or moisture.
They may be installed in areas where temporary dampness may occur as long as there is sufficient ventilation to prevent the accumulation of moisture.
This is the most common rating on light fixtures and is usually just referred to as UL listed.
If a light fixture is marked “suitable for damp locations” it is damp-rated and can be installed in damp environments. They can safely withstand a limited amount of moisture in, on, or around their electrical components. Keep in mind, they are not rated for direct contact with water.
They can be used indoors in rooms including laundry rooms, bathrooms, utility rooms, and unfinished basements. They can also be used outdoors in areas protected from the elements, for example covered decks and patios.
If you are installing a light fixture in an area that is regularly exposed to the elements, moisture, or condensation, you need a lighting fixture that is marked “suitable for wet locations”.
These wet-rated fixtures can be used in many outdoor settings and indoors in enclosed showers, pool areas, refrigerators, and freezers.
Wet-rated fixtures also come with the following sub-categories:
Covered ceiling mount only
These fixtures can only be installed where water will be coming from below the mounting locations. Only the front side of these fixtures is wet rated, the backside isn’t. Meaning if water gets in from the back, there will be problems.
Suitable for mounting within 1.2 meters (4 feet) of ground
These lights are designed to withstand intermittent splashing and exposure to water, like the exposure to water they would get from a sprinkler. They are not safe to be used in or on the ground where they may become immersed.
Suitable for ground-mounted recessed
These fixtures can be used below ground level and can withstand occasional immersion. For example, immersion due to rain.
Well, that depends on the function of the light fixture, how high the ceilings are, and the room you are hanging them in. We’ve included some general guidelines for the most common areas in your home.
For standard 8-foot ceilings, the bottom of your light fixture should be 30 to 36 inches from the top of your dining room table.
For 9-foot ceilings, the bottom of your light fixture should be 36 to 40 inches above the top of your dining room table.
For 10-foot ceilings, the bottom of your light fixture should be 40 to 44 inches above the top of your dining room table.
If you have 8-foot ceilings, your light fixture (pendant, chandelier, etc.) should be at minimum 7 feet (84 inches) off the floor. This will give you and your guest sufficient headroom.
For higher ceilings, add 3 inches to the above number for every foot of ceiling height over 9 feet. For example, if you have 12-foot ceilings, you should add 9 inches to the distance between the bottom of the fixture and your floor.
When hanging lights over your kitchen island, you should have a minimum of 30 inches of clearance between the top of the island and the bottom of the fixture.
