A drain pipe camera inspection is a process where a small, waterproof camera is inserted into a drain or sewer line to inspect the interior of the pipes. The camera is attached to a flexible rod that can be guided through the pipes to capture high-definition video and images of the inside of the drain or sewer. This process can help identify problems such as blockages, leaks, cracks, corrosion, and root intrusion.
Sewer backups are the worst. They can cause frustration, inconvenience, and damage to your property that can take months to repair.
Sewer backups happen when obstructions in your main sewer line stop sewage from traveling into the city sewer system. Instead, any plumbing you use backs up through your basement floor drain and into your home.
The only way to properly see if your main sewer drain will backup is to have a regular pipe camera inspection. A pipe camera inspection will show what is occurring inside your drain piping. If roots are beginning to intrude your pipes, organic buildup is becoming an issue, or piping is misaligned, a pipe camera inspection will show these issues. It will also reveal issues with the piping such as low spots. A regular camera inspection will not only show issues, but having it done regularly will show how quickly these issues might lead to a plugged sewer line.
Pipe camera inspections can only be done on pipes 3 inches or larger. This would include toilet drains, stacks, and sewer mains. Any pipe smaller than 3 inches has a chance of catching the inspection camera. Camera inspections on your system will also help you make decisions going forward. Knowing you have roots in your sewer line, for example, gives you the opportunity to deal with the roots before a blockage occurs. Whether it is a sewer liner, trenchless pipe replacement, or traditional excavation, a pipe camera inspection helps you make an informed decision about how to keep your home functioning properly in the long-term.
