Kitchen sinks are some of the hardest-working utilities in the house, so they get clogged more often than other sinks may. Here are some typical clogging residues to watch out for!
A lot of homeowners think a garburator can handle anything – but that’s not quite true. While they’re great for small scraps, they can’t break down fibrous peels, coffee grounds, or large amounts of food. These either clog inside the disposal or get pushed further down the line, where they combine with grease and soap to form stubborn blockages. If you’re having frequent kitchen clogs, the disposal may be part of the problem. Make sure that you scrape much of your food before putting them in the sink or dishwasher to help!
The water supply in Edmonton tends to have higher levels of calcium and magnesium, which can create hard water scale build up in your pipes. As it accumulates, it creates a rough surface that food particles and grease catch onto more easily, creating frequent clogs and reducing the pipe diameter. This scale can become more hardened with added build up from soap and fat common in kitchen drains that can usually only be removed with professional tools (described below).
