How to Become an Electrician in Alberta
Thinking about becoming an electrician? We may be a little biased, but we believe working in the trades is an excellent career choice. Electricians play a vital role in keeping homes, businesses, and communities powered safely and efficiently.
Like most skilled professions, becoming a certified electrician requires training and education. In Alberta, this is done through an apprenticeship program, which combines classroom instruction with hands-on experience.
What Is an Apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a structured training program where you learn the trade while working under the supervision of a certified journeyman electrician. In Alberta, apprenticeships are regulated by the provincial government through the Apprenticeship and Industry Training program.
This system has two main components:
- On-the-job training with an employer
- Technical training completed at an accredited post-secondary institution
This combination allows apprentices to gain both theoretical knowledge and real-world experience.
Electrician Apprenticeship Requirements in Alberta
An electrician apprenticeship in Alberta typically lasts four years. In some specialized areas, the program may extend up to six years.
The typical training schedule includes:
- Years 1–3: 1,560 hours of on-the-job training and eight weeks of technical training each year
- Year 4: 1,440 hours of on-the-job training and twelve weeks of technical training
Throughout this period, apprentices learn electrical theory, safety practices, code requirements, and practical installation and troubleshooting skills.
How to Start an Electrician Apprenticeship
To begin an electrician apprenticeship in Alberta, you must meet several basic requirements:
- You must be a legal Canadian citizen or hold a valid work permit.
- You must find an employer willing to hire you as an apprentice.
- Your apprenticeship contract must be registered with Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training.
- You must meet the educational entrance requirements or pass the entrance exam.
Once hired by an employer, you and your employer will complete the apprenticeship application together. This creates the official apprenticeship contract that must be submitted to the provincial government.
Applications are submitted online and include a small registration fee.
