Are you wondering what’s behind your walls? And by that we mean are you wondering about the condition of the electrical wires, connectors, and other electrical parts in your home?
If you are, you should consider having one of our electricians come in and inspect and test your electrical system.
Electrical safety inspections and testing are invaluable because they:
We recommend having your electrical inspected and tested every 2 to 5 years to make sure everything is in good working order.
During an inspection our qualified electricians:
Our electrician will give you recommendations based on what they discover during the inspection and your answers to their questions. You will receive a copy of the inspection report and our recommendations.
Don’t worry, we will go through both the report and the recommendations with you and answer all your questions.
Let’s get you inspected.
Most of us are familiar with or have at least heard of an electrical inspection. But usually, that only brings to mind a regulatory inspection. It has never occurred to us that there is another type of electrical inspection.
So what is the difference?
These inspections are mandated by the jurisdiction (municipality, city, town, district, etc.) where you live. They are conducted at predetermined stages of construction or renovations.
They are performed by a government inspector and are mandatory. When you start your project you will need to get the required permits from your local government. In Alberta, only Master Electricians can pull electrical permits.
Depending on the jurisdiction, there are usually two electrical inspections. One at the rough-in stage before the drywall has gone up. This allows the inspector to more easily examine the installed electrical components and wiring. If you do not pass this inspection, you will need to make the needed changes and be inspected again. The second inspection is usually at completion.
In Red Deer, you must get an electrical permit for any alterations or new wiring. If you are replacing existing fixtures (switches, outlets, and lights) and there is existing wiring, you do not need a permit.
The City of Red Deer also requires two safety inspections. You will be required to correct any deficiencies discovered at any of the inspections.
Please contact the City of Red Deer for more information on how to apply for your electrical permit and schedule your two inspections.
Permits and mandatory inspections ensure the work meets the Canadian Electrical Code, local building codes, bylaws, and health and safety standards.
Please check your local jurisdiction’s website to see what permits you need and when mandatory inspections need to be scheduled.
If you decide to do electrical work without the requisite permits, you might still be inspected. But it will be a surprise inspection and probably a lot less pleasant than if you’d gotten the permits. You could be on the receiving end of fines and punishments if you do or hire someone to do unpermitted work.
This is not a regulatory-mandated inspection. But it is still a great inspection to get done. It will let you know if your electrical system is working properly and safely. It gives you confidence in your system and peace of mind.
An electrical safety inspection can:
We recommend you have a safety electrical inspection every few years to make sure your home is safe to live in. There are other reasons to get an inspection.
It’s good to make sure everything is in good working order.
Please make sure you hire a journeyperson electrician to conduct the safety electrical inspection and testing for you. Also, make sure you get a completed report and/or signed safety certificate stating the electrical in your home is safe.
