#1 Leave the Heat On

People often turn the heat down in their homes before they leave for vacation. The money you save by lowering the thermostat is minimal compared to the risk added to your home.

Typically, homes have an average temperature, but there are warmer and colder areas throughout. If your thermostat is set to 20°C, some areas may be warmer, while others—like basements or drafty spaces—may be much colder.

When the temperature of your home is lowered even a few degrees, the coldest parts of your home drop even further.

These colder, draftier areas are at the highest risk, and water inside pipes can freeze.

As water freezes, it expands, damaging and cracking pipes.

#2 Don’t Turn Off the Furnace

In extreme situations, some homeowners turn the heat off completely before leaving on a trip.

In one case, outside temperatures dropped drastically, causing indoor temperatures to fall below freezing. Every toilet in the house cracked, along with additional damage to water lines.

#3 Check Heating Vents & Airflow

Ensure all heating vents are unobstructed so warm air can circulate throughout your home.

Replace the furnace filter to maintain proper airflow.

Keep interior doors open, especially near plumbing lines, to allow heat to circulate.

#4 Check for Leaks and Leaking Toilets

Inspect under sinks and plumbing connections for slow leaks.

Test toilets by adding a few drops of food colouring to the tank. If colour appears in the bowl, there is a leak.

#5 Check Washing Machine and Dishwasher for Standing Water

Ensure both appliances are free of standing water. Stagnant water can lead to bacteria growth and unpleasant odors while you are away.

#6 Set Water Heater to Vacation Mode

Many water heaters have a vacation mode setting. Use this feature to save energy while you are away. (This does not apply to tankless water heaters.)

#7 Check Smoke Detector Batteries

Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries if needed.

Ensure doors and windows seal properly, including your garage door. Water lines near garages are often the first to freeze during cold snaps.

#8 Unplug Major Appliances, Computers, and TVs

Unplug major appliances and electronics to prevent damage from power surges. (If you have whole-home surge protection, this may not be necessary.)

Most power surges are not caused by lightning, making this a simple precaution.

#9 Have a Friend Check Your Home

Ask a friend or neighbour to check your home while you are away.

Small issues can quickly become major problems if left unnoticed—for example, a small leak turning into significant water damage.

#10 Turn Off Main Water Line (Optional)

If your home is at risk for leaks, consider turning off the main water line to prevent damage.

If you need help locating or repairing the main shutoff valve, contact a professional. Older homes may benefit from upgrading to a ball valve instead of a gate valve, which can rust and seize over time.
